Who owns TSTV Africa?
Since the news of this impeding digital TV broke the internet, am sure the thinkers at DSTV must have been put to work. This new digital television, if successful, might be the end of DSTV.
But before we begin to wear our dancing shoes, let’s try to find out who truly owns and runs TSTV, so as to know if they have the capacity to compete, and not replicate the HiTv.
As we all know, Naspers owns DSTV and they have made a lot of fortune from that digital television provider. TSTv, the new deal in town is owned by ABS, and they are set to compete with Naspers for the market share in Nigeria.
ABS TSTV is special and different from Naspers DSTV. This digital television is based on the pay-per-view model. So this brings a new dimension to the competition. Well, I see DSTV taking similar move as TSTV.
TSTv Nigeria or TSTv Africa, as the case might be, is a joint venture owned by ABS and Telcom Satellites TV.
TSTv signals will be distributed on the ABS 3A Africa beam, located at 3 degrees west.
Now that you know the owner of TSTv, which is ABS and Telcom Satellites TV, let’s now give you the history of this company.
Complete History of TSTv Nigeria/Africa
Don’t get it twisted, the journey of TSTv didn’t begin 2017, this company has a longer history.
In the year 2006, ABS successfully concluded the acquisition of the Lockheed Martin Intersputnik-1 (LMI-1) satellite which was promptly renamed ABS-1 satellite.
This was followed in the year 2010, with the announcement of the successful acquisition of ABS from Citi Venture Capital International and Asia Debt Management by Permira funds and the ABS management team .
In Nigeria, ABS is trading with the name TSTV, but operates under the company name TELCOM SATELLITES LIMITED.
Now it gets more confusing right?
Here is it, TELCOM SATELLITES is registered under the Companies and Allied Matters Act, Laws of Nigeria. The company‘s current and planned activities extend throughout Nigeria and would be expanding to other African countries.
Since ABS owns TSTV, who owns ABS?
This is one smart question, at least ABS didn’t just drop from the skies.
ABS is majority owned by the Permira funds which are advised by European Private Equity firm Permira.
ABS is led by a management team of talented and experienced professionals, and offers a complete range of End-to-End solutions including Direct to Home (DTH), Cable TV distribution (CATV), Cellular Backhaul, VSAT and Internet Backbone services with diverse IP transit through its European, Middle East and Asian internet gateways.
