NYSC member constructs sculptural piece in Lagos

NYSC 27 11 16 - NYSC member constructs sculptural piece in Lagos

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Osueke Chiamaka Juliet, has executed projects, worth over N500,000 in Ikeja Local Council of Lagos State, as part of her Community Development Service (CDS). Osueke, a graduate of History and International Studies from Imo State University, Owerri, who served at the Lagos State Ministry of Arts and Culture, constructed a sculptural piece (a drummer and dancer) at the Council for Arts and Culture; refurbished cupboards, glass door and fixed fans at the NYSC office, Ikeja; and paid examination fees of two less privileged students of Ikeja Senior High School for their National Examination Council, through the assistance of individuals and corporate organisations.

According to her, the effort is one of the four cardinal programmes of the NYSC through which corps members contribute positively to the development of their host communities. She said the objective of the projects was to highlight the need to impact positively on their host communities, without thinking of what one would gain in return.

“The execution of the three projects are my own contributions to my host community, where I am serving my father’s land. The sculptural piece was meant to beautify the environment, to serve as tourism attraction and cultural awareness. The repair at the NYSC goes along with the saying that charity begins at home. The facilities would further boost the image of the NYSC office.”

Osueke, however, said in executing the projects, she faced challenges, which include getting sponsors and several disappointments that nearly jeopardised her dream but for her determination, the dream would have been aborted.

In a recommendation letter signed by Director, Arts & Culture, Mrs. S.O Otulana, Osueke was described as “diligent, versatile and focused, who also demonstrated sterling qualities in the discharge of her duties.”

In its own letter, Ikeja Senior High School described her effort as a demonstration of love for mankind, which will forever be indelible in the lives of the beneficiaries.
