There are many mouthwatering delicacies in Nigeria that nourish the body and also provides various health benefits. Have you ever wondered the health benefits of that your favorite native soup? This post will discuss about the nutrients gotten from some of our native soups.
As a Nigerian, I can say we all grew up eating soups from our various tribes and loved the way it was prepared and served with pounded yam, garri, fufu, or semo but not many people are fully aware of the nutrients contained in these vegetables and other ingredients which were used to prepare the meal.
1. Egusi Soup – is one of the most popular soups in Nigeria, because it is loved by all tribes. The soup is called Ofe Egusi in Igbo, Efo Elegusi by the Yoruba and called soup Miyan Gushi in Hausa language.
Egusi soup is made from melon seed and is prepared with vegetables which then makes this meal very rich in fats and protein and helps in building the body immune system. Therefore, egusi soup can serve as an antioxidant and can also help prevent high cholesterol.
2. Edikang Ikong Soup – this delicious native soup is prepared mostly in the south-south part of Nigeria. The soup which is also known as Vegetable soup is a native soup of the Efik tribe. One of the major ingredient are fresh vegetables, such as pumpkin leaves and water leaf, which contain nutrients that perform various functions in the body thereby improving health.
Edikang Ikong soup is very rich in omega 3 fatty acid which is a necessity for good human health. Edikang Ikong soup is also known reduced the risk of rheumatism and arthritis in old people and increases vision.
3. Bitter Leaf Soup – The soup might be called “bitter leaf soup” but it’s quite tasty when prepared and served with pounded yam, garri, fufu, or semo. Ofe Onugbu as it called by the igbos, is a very delicious and nutritious soup. The leaf used in preparing this soup is called bitter leaf(Vernonia Amygdalina).
This soup is very medicinal. Bitter leave is also rich in vitamin A, B1 & B2. Bitter leaf soup can serve as an antioxidant in the body and can help fight various ailments by boosting the body immune system.
4. Oha soup – This delicious soup is a native soup of the Igbos. It is prepared by using ora leaves (Pterocarpus Sayonsii). The leaves have anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, thereby they are used by herbal doctors to treat malaria and also patients who suffer from digestive issues.
Oha soup contain a high level of fibre and amino acid because of the leaves, some mineral that can gotten from the leaves are calcium, magnesium, iron etc. Oha soup is prepared using cocoyam which rich in vitamin B6 and magnesium. Cocoyam also contains flavonoid, and this prevent diseases such as lung and throat cancer. Oha soup is also very good for pregnant women.
